We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like standard body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.
A Directorial Debut Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
